とつくにの少女
Directed by Satomi Maiya, Yutaro Kubo
Synopsis
Once upon a time, in a far, faraway place, there were two lands. The world was divided into an inner land and an outer land. People feared the outer land, inhabited by eerie beings, the carriers of curse. One day, on the border to the inner land inhabited by humans, one such being finds a girl on heaps of abandoned dead bodies. The girl says her name is Shiva and shows affection to the "being" who found her, calling him "Teacher." This is a story of two people—one human, one inhuman—who linger in the hazy twilight that separates night from day.

Summer Scavenger Hunt #20 (12/25)
Like some stumbled upon childhood picture book, gentle and imaginative and so full of life. It may be more visually interesting than narratively so, but each concept explored by the wonderful images is done so well. Absolutely nails both the cozy fantasy aesthetic and the vaguely horror-like elements, while leaving space for the characters and mysteries to develop. Little exposition is done, giving any newcomers to the franchise freedom to explore the lovely little world this movie sets up. I haven't read the manga, so I can't attest to its quality as an adaptation, but such a gem anyway.

If your soul and heart are tired and you need to rest, I can recommend this movie to you. Sweet, warm, yet sad story. After watching it, you will realize that this movie is unlike any other movie you have ever seen. The story of innocence, lost souls, true emotions.
Children are always better than us at seeing people's hearts. -

i thought this is gonna be like Somali and The Forest Spirit but darker.
did i just cried? yes. over what? idk? about the terrifying darkness and curses or because the pureness form of love presented in a beauty of sketch drawing and adorable Shiva? seriously, this OVA just give you a nibble of their whole story to taste, yet its already enganged me. without spoiling anything this particularly well built to allure you into its irresistable gloominess. now i need to read the manga! -

Did this anime adaptation have as much of the story intricacies as its source material? No. It clearly did not. It skips quite a bit, especially physical confrontations that happen early on, and leaves many of its mysteries even more ambiguous. Even more unclear and unsolved. Some characters are entire ciphers and remain such even after its end.
Because this ain’t about them.
This ain’t about the mysteries of this seemingly dying world either. It’s about a cursed man who struggles with what is left of his humanity and his loneliness and a girl who has been just as abandoned by the circumstances of this world and how they learn to remain by each other’s side, like father and daughter,…

Very impressed with this work. The story of protecting & shielding your loved ones from the evil that lies in the outside of the world is a simple, yet timeless one. The two characters are really likable in their own ways, one is constantly worried about the future and wants the best possible outcome and the other enjoys every little moment in that accursed world. In a way they complement each other perfectly.

The best thing about this adaptation are probably the animations, which have successfully maintained the style of the manga. The story has been changed, obviously three episodes cannot contain 11 tankobons, and it's a shame 'cause I would have liked to see a longer and more complete adaptation, and I don't understand the choice to create only three episodes.
It's still a pretty good and totally valid adaptation, a touching and very sweet story.
I absolutely recommend reading the manga, which I find better in many aspects, but obviously it's a different type of experience."The time will come when all must be revealed.
Please forgive my cowardice in wishing that day would never arrived." -

It's very thin narratively, but that isn't to say it wasn't still beautiful. Visually, this thing is fantastic. The bakgrounds, the shading, the character designs; everything is top-noth. Overall, I had a good time. Would like to read the manga in the future.

"Even an outsider like me can become your light," Sensei.
Super weird plot for someone who did not read the manga. But I still feel the emptiness in its core.

Moody and atmospheric, this small adaptation of the manga dark fable, The Girl From the Other Side, has a lot going for it.
The biggest is it’s beautiful animation which lends the tell an aura of dreamlike storytelling. The next is it’s equally ethereal plot and the characters that have to live it.
A lot of care has been placed in this adaptation; the story of two cursed individuals that aren’t affected by it in normal ways and have been forced into exile. The film doesn’t sacrifice the story’s more softer pensive scenes and tones. It can be at times equally calm and unsettling.
Where it falters is in exposition, as in, there is rarely none. In this way it… -

The Cursed Twilight
